In London, the Lord Mayor's office has launched the Green Procurement Code to offer organisations assistance with 'greening' their supply chain and earlier this month BT revealed a new procurement policy that calls for its 6,000 contracted suppliers to measure, report and reduce their carbon footprints.
"The message is clear," said Alex Rabbetts, Managing Director of data centre specialists Migration Solutions, "sustainability is not just for big companies – it now going to be important to anyone who wants to sell to them as well."
The 'greening' of the supply chain will mean that companies will need to understand and be accountable for the environmental performance of every aspect of their business and their own suppliers, and this includes how their computer services are hosted.
"For many 'online intensive' businesses how and where they procure their hosting will have the biggest impact on their carbon footprint," said Rabbetts. "The data centre that hosts them will be energy-intensive and companies need to ensure their hosting partners are taking the right steps to minimise their environmental impact - otherwise their carbon footprint will become yours!"

1. What does the data centre do with the heat that its IT equipment generates? Forward thinking data centres will have heat-recovery plants which re-use heat generated in the technical room to supply hot water and radiators in the communal areas of the data centre, reusing valuable energy that less advanced data centres waste.
2. Does the data centre use the free cooling provided by the UK's climate? With a good UK location and state-of-the-art chillers, a data centre can benefit from over 8,000 hours of free cooling every year. The latest technology intelligently monitors the ambient temperature outside and uses it to cool the equipment wherever possible – the chilling equipment only starts running when the ambient outside temperature rises above a pre-set level.
3. Is the air-conditioning system up to the latest environmental specification?Make sure your host's Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) units are non-ozone-depleting.
4. Check the data centre's lighting – does it have motion activated LED lights in all areas? Unlike conventional light sources, LEDs in many applications will last for more than 10 years of operation. Importantly LEDs do not generate heat like conventional lighting and use only one tenth of the power to produce the same light. Motion activated lighting makes good environmental sense as data centres are managed remotely most of the time.
5. Does the data centre have the right credentials?The EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres and The Green Grid are the key organisations – is your computer services host a member of either? "Whilst data centres and computer rooms are huge users of power, much can be done to reduce and minimise their impact on the environment," says Rabbetts. "Our new Norwich colocation data centre, Sentry42 , uses the most environmental heating and cooling systems possible and I expect it to be an important link in many companies sustainable supply chains when it opens in May."

A two-week hearing begins Monday to determine the fate of Tribune Co. more than two years after an ill-advised $8.2 billion buyout drove one of the oldest U.S. media companies into bankruptcy protection.
The proceedings follow four years of tumult and intrigue at Tribune Co. The company has been through the disgrace of a bankruptcy case that has lasted far longer than planned, a CEO departure triggered by complaints about management's raunchiness and the whiff of a financial scandal fanned by a court-appointed examiner's conclusion that parts of the 2007 buyout had bordered on fraud.
The hearing in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Del., will affect the ownership of the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune, The Sun of Baltimore, other daily newspapers and 23 television stations. The TV stations include Chicago-based WGN, which reaches more than 70 million homes nationwide, mostly through cable and satellite systems.
The hearing edges Tribune Co. closer toward shedding most of the roughly $13 billion that it newsmatic.com">carried into bankruptcy protection. If it can unload the debt, the company believes it can make money while it tries to adapt to a marketing shift to the Internet.
Judge Kevin Carey is being asked to choose between two competing reorganization plans. The plans differ in their appraisals of Tribune Co.'s current value and their limitations on which participants in the troublesome buyout can be sued for saddling the company with too much debt.
Either way, the outcome is likely to leave Tribune Co. controlled by its creditors. The new owners are expected to replace the patchwork management team that has been running the Chicago-based company since the previous CEO, Randy Michaels, resigned in October amid complaints about risque conduct.
Tribune Co., founded in 1847, filed for bankruptcy protection in December 2008, making it the first major U.S. newspaper publisher to do so during the Great Recession. The deep downturn magnified the challenges facing newspaper publishers as readers and advertisers moved from print to digital alternatives.
The slump prompted more than a dozen other newspaper publishers to follow Tribune Co. into bankruptcy protection. Like Tribune Co., several of them were saddled with billions of debt taken on during better times. Most of them have emerged from bankruptcy protection already.
The complex 2007 buyout engineered by real estate mogul Sam Zell complicated Tribune Co.'s effort to return to normal business operations. The allegations of financial conduct made many creditors less inclined to make concessions during negotiations on a reorganization plan. The independent examiner's report last summer prompted the company to back off one proposal.
This month's hearing makes it more likely that Tribune Co. will finally emerge from bankruptcy court this year. The legal fallout could last for years, however. Both plans envision creditors pursuing lawsuits in an attempt to recover more of their losses, and there could be an appeal of Carey's decision in the case.
The stakes riding on the resolution of the convoluted saga are expected to attract a crowd. Carey is setting up a video feed in an overflow room to accommodate up to 100 more people beyond the 175 spectators that can cram into his courtroom. The judge also is clearing space in the courtroom for more than 2,000 exhibits expected to be submitted during the hearing.
"It will take some time and involve some tedium," Carey said during a housekeeping hearing last week.
The hearings also could shed more light on Tribune Co.'s operations and the behind-the-scenes maneuvering that led to the Zell buyout, which took the company private and turned employees into part-owners.
Reams of documents in the case have been kept under wraps to protect what has been described as confidential business information. Carey so far has rejected requests to unseal the documents, but he has warned that some of the information could come out during the hearing because he doesn't plan to close the courtroom.
Tribune Co. favors a plan that would turn over ownership to the company's major creditors, including some that had helped line up the ruinous financing, which already has triggered lawsuits. It would shield the lenders involved in the buyout from lawsuits after the company emerges from Chapter 11. Opponents of the plan contend it would also block attempts to sue former Tribune Co. shareholders who received $4.3 billion in the buyout's first phase.
This proposal has the backing of Tribune's Co.'s proposed new owners — a group led by banker JPMorgan Chase & Co., distressed debt specialist Angelo, Gordon & Co. and hedge fund Oaktree Capital Management. It's also supported by Tribune Co.'s committee for unsecured creditors.
A group of creditors that owns Tribune Co. debt issued before the Zell buyout has proposed an alternative plan primarily because they want fewer limits on which parties can be sued for alleged fraud. The plan also contends these note holders, led by hedge fund Aurelius Capital, are entitled to be paid bankruptcy claims totaling $1.2 billion instead of $761 million offered in the proposal backed by Tribune Co.
Zell, still Tribune Co.'s chairman, has filed objections to both plans because he and a business arm, Equity Group Investments, would remain exposed to lawsuits alleging fraud.
The competing reorganization plans also came up with dramatically different estimates on Tribune Co.'s business value. The company-backed plan pegs it at $6.7 billion, compared with $8.3 billion in the Aurelius-led proposal.
Tribune Co. has been gradually recovering from the recession, primarily because of an industry-wide revival in television advertising. The company's revenue last year totaled $3.1 billion, 2 percent below 2009, based on court documents.
But the company still gets more of its revenue from newspapers and other publishing sources. Tribune Co. has predicted its revenue this year will decline 4 percent, dip another 2 percent in 2012 and slip 3 percent in 2013.
Those forecasts assume the new owners won't break the company apart by selling some of the newspapers and TV stations.

Playboy Enterprises Inc. said Friday that its acquisition by Hefner's Icon Acquisition Holdings LP has closed.
The $6.15-per-share deal was funded with $195 million of debt and $185 million from the private investment firm Rizvi Traverse and Playboy management, including Hefner.
Under the deal, Rizvi Traverse will own about 60 percent of the company. Hefner will own about 37 percent, and other executive management will have the remaining 3 percent.
Hefner remains editor-in-chief and chief creative officer of Playboy.
The racy magazine Hefner launched in 1953 was most popular back in the 1970s. It has struggled to lure readers and advertisers as adult content on the Internet bloomed. Falling revenue has forced several rounds of layoffs since 2008.

Latest figures for the January-October 2010 show that the number of foreign tourist arrivals was up nearly 5% year-on-year (y-o-y), representing a rebound on a poor performance in 2009. Domestic tourist numbers though fell by almost 6% y-o-y, continuing the downward trend recorded in the previous year (although at a less severe rate). In total, foreign and domestic tourism numbers increased by 3.3% y-o-y. Four key source markets, Germany, Slovenia, Austria and the Czech Republic, all recorded favourable growth in arrivals of between 4% and 6% y-o-y during the 10-month period. Despite poor growth in foreign arrivals in August 2010 of just 1% y-o-y, arrivals growth picked up in September and October to 5.6% and 8.5% y-o-y respectively.
Hospitality
According to data for the first 10 months of 2010, there was a modest recovery in the hospitality sector, with total tourist nights up by 2.6% y-o-y. The number of foreign tourist nights (accounting for some 91% of the total) rose by a reasonable 3.5% y-o-y, while domestic tourist nights declined by nearly 6% y-o-y. Concerning Croatia's main source market, Germany, tourist nights rose by 2.6% y-o-y, while three other important markets, Slovenia, Austria and the Czech Republic, recorded even stronger growth of around 7%, 4% and 5% y-o-y respectively. Tourist nights attributed to arrivals from Italy, however, fell nearly 4% y-o-y.
Industry Forecast Scenario
BMI has improved slightly the outlook for the tourism sector in 2011, with growth in arrivals forecast at an annual 3%. Concerning economic conditions in major source markets, we are forecasting steady growth in the eurozone going into 2011, at 1.6%. Economic growth in the two key source markets Germany and Italy though is expected to diverge in the short term. After the kuna weakened against the euro and US dollar in 2010, further slight depreciation of the HRK/EUR exchange rate is forecast for the end of 2011, compared with the end of 2010 - helping the tourism sector.

A new international ferry port is expected be completed by the end of 2012 in the area of Gazenica in Zadar. Shortly after coaching Lipan to a regional semifinal victory on Feb. 25, Branson gave birth to daughter Leslie. And about 15 hours later, she was back on the bench guiding the Lady Indians to another win and the school's first berth in the Texas state tournament since 2003.
"I was pretty tired," Branson said Friday, a few hours before Lipan was routed by defending champion Neches 65-26 in the semifinals of Class 1A Division II, the division for the state's smallest schools. "I never felt like I couldn't do it. God's been good to me this week."
Branson knew such a scenario was possible if her team went deep into the playoffs. After her team won its regional semifinal, she went back to her hotel room to rest.
Having two children already, it wasn't long before the 34-year-old Branson realized her third was rapidly on her way.
Branson went to the hospital in Abilene shortly after 9 p.m. and gave birth to her 8-pound, 7-ounce, 19.75-inch long little girl about an hour later. Leslie came so fast she didn't give her mom time to get an epidural for pain.
"If I had the epidural, I might not have been able to make it" to the game, she said.
Instead, by 2 p.m. the next day Branson was back on the bench, exhausted and sore but urging her team on as they rallied from 15 points down to win.
The hardest part was leaving baby Leslie at the hospital. But there was no way Branson was going to let her team play such a big game without her.
"I would have taken her with me if I could have," Branson said.
Les Branson said his wife has taken some criticism in the media for her decision.
"People don't understand what basketball's like in Lipan," Les Branson said of the 400-person town 90 miles west of Dallas. The school has only 76 students, making it the second-smallest in the tournament.
After the game, Branson went back to the hospital "to be a mom for a few hours" and rest. The Lady Indians went to the hospital and took a team photo surrounding Leslie.
Coincidentally, the team motto this season is, "If it's easy, I don't want it."
Still just a week old, Leslie made it to the state tournament. She was in a baby carrier two rows behind the Lipan bench and tucked under a pink striped blanket.
The Bransons plan to put a basketball in Leslie's hands at an early age — she'll play guard, dad says — and they hope to someday return to Austin to watch her win a state championship.
At the very least, Leslie is already part of Lipan lore.
And how will her parents tell her the story of the week? They'll talk about the small-town team that made it to state.
"I tell her how proud I am of the girls who brought her here," Branson said.

Earlier this week, Mariah Carey, Beyonce and Nelly Furtado all renounced their performances at private concerts later revealed to be linked to the family of Gadhafi, whose country is openly revolting against him and who faces an investigation for possible war crimes.
All the singers have promised to give their fees to charity or said they have already done so.
Usher did not perform but was paid to appear at the private concert featuring Beyonce in 2009.
"I am sincerely troubled to learn about the circumstances surrounding the Nikki Beach St. Bart's event that took place on New Year's Eve 2009, " he said in a statement released to The Associated Press.
"I will be donating all of my personal proceeds from that event to various human rights organizations."
The statement said Usher made a contribution Friday to Amnesty International, which the organization confirmed. The group said Usher requested the donation amount be private.
"Amnesty International activists are working globally to press the international community to support Middle East activists ... Usher's donation will support this urgent work to counter the brutal conditions like those imposed by Gadhafi and other leaders across the Middle East," a statement from the organization said.
Since the uprising in Libya, attention has focused on entertainers paid by the Gadhafi family for private concerts. Furtado acknowledged getting $1 million which she promised to give to charity.
Beyonce said she donated her fees for to Haiti earthquake relief once she discovered the Gadhafi link.
Carey said she was unaware of whom she was performing for and "embarrassed." She announced she will donate royalties for the song "Save the Day," which she has written for her upcoming album, to charities that create awareness for human-rights issues.

Other infection sources have not been ruled out as the cause of the illness because the bacteria Legionella is common in moist places, Los Angeles County Department of Public Health director Dr. Jonathan E. Fielding said.
"We are still considering several possible causes of illness," Fielding said in a prepared statement.
County health officials opened an investigation Feb. 11 after attendees of an Internet conference reported symptoms mostly consisting of fever, chills, malaise and coughing.
In a statement, Playboy spokeswoman Teri Thomerson said people at the mansion, which is listed as an asset of the media company, were cooperating with the investigation.
"To date, there have been no confirmed cases of any respiratory or other illness arising out of any Playboy Mansion function," Thomerson said in the statement.
Hefner has not left his residence, she said.
"There has never been any reason for him to evacuate during this investigation." Thomerson said.
The DOMAINfest Global Conference took place Feb. 1-3 with events at several hotels and a fundraiser at the Holmby Hills estate where Playboy founder Hugh Hefner resides.
About 700 people from 30 countries attended lectures and workshops at the conference. The county is investigating the outbreak with state and federal health officials to track illness outside Los Angeles.
Health officials declined comment on where the bacteria were discovered at the mansion, calling it only a water source. That could mean anywhere from a kitchen tap to the famed grotto, where Playboy bunnies have mingled with guests in a hot tub.
Legionnaires' disease causes respiratory illness and its symptoms include coughing, malaise, chills and fever. Fewer than 18,000 Americans are hospitalized for the illness every year.
In annual financial filings, Playboy said the mansion is used for corporate activities, film and television production, magazine photography and charitable and civic functions.
At least one major event is planned at the sprawling 29-room mansion in coming months. Hefner, 84, intends to marry fiancée Crystal Harris, 24, at the mansion this summer.
